The home on Crefeld Street, originally owned by my great-grandparents in the early 1920s and later passed to my grandparents, was filled with beauty, contentment, and love. Judith and David Mallery made sure the walls and gardens sang with magic, celebrated the richness of life and history, and welcomed all who visited with warmth, kindness, and the perfect cup of tea.
Embedded on the wall on the way to the garden was the “Joy of Effort” medal, designed by Robert Tait McKenzie for the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. I remember this bronze relief because my grandmother would cheerfully pat the runner on the bottom when she walked past. It was also a reminder of the joy my grandparents found in making special efforts - in their home, with family and friends, and at work - to honor their space and embrace everyone with care.
